About Round Goby |
Round Goby is an invasive fish that was first documented in Fairy Lake in August 2024. This fish is harmful to the ecosystem by outcompeting native fish for food and habitat, and eating the eggs and young of many desirable sport fish. Round Gobies, originally from eastern Europe, are currently found in all the Great Lakes and many inland lakes and streams throughout Ontario. Because the impacts can be detrimental to a lake ecosystem, it is illegal in Canada to possess live Round Goby or use them as bait. They are usually unwittingly spread from lake to lake through bait buckets. For more information about the Mayor’s Fishing Derby, email Michelle Bourdeau, Manager, Environment & Climate at mbourdeau@haltonhills.ca |
