The Town of Halton Hills was formed through the provincially mandated amalgamation of Esquesing Township, Georgetown and Acton in 1974. On January 1, 2024, the Town will mark its 50th anniversary of incorporation.
The municipality will mark the event through a series of local initiatives, building on existing programs.

Legacy Project Grants |
The Town is offering up to $2500 (to match funding or volunteer hours) to local, not-for-profit community groups, clubs, and organizations for 50th anniversary legacy projects. A limited number of projects can be funded through the $10,000 budget. Projects must relate to the 50th anniversary theme of “Recognizing the Communities of Halton Hills” and:
Projects could consist of community improvements, public art, park or trail-related components, signage/plaques, or outdoor furniture or amenities. Public Reception and Halton Hills History Presentation |
On January 10, 2024, at 6 p.m., the Town will host a public reception in the Cultural Centre located at 9 Church Street. The event will feature remarks from Mayor Ann Lawlor, entertainment, light refreshments, and special props for photo opportunities. Town Council members will be in attendance. At 7:30 p.m., local historian Mark Rowe, Archivist with the Esquesing Historical Society will give a presentation in the John Elliot Theatre. Mark will share a brief history of this land and its European settlement that will culminate in an overview of the constituent parts of Halton Hills during its first 50 years. This free, ticketed presentation is part of the Halton Hills Library Lecture Series. Get tickets through the John Elliott Theatre Box Office starting November 3. |
Halton Hills Public Library Programming & Events |
Halton Hills Public Library will recognize the 50th anniversary of the Town and library by developing a virtual exhibit on Halton Hills Images. Utilizing historical photographs, archival records, and newspapers from the Esquesing Historical Society and the library, the exhibit will showcase the history of the towns and hamlets that amalgamated to form Halton Hills. The exhibit will also highlight the history of the Georgetown, Acton and Esquesing libraries and their amalgamation that paralleled the Town. The library's collections will promote the Town's local history throughout the year. Examples include:

Doors Open Celebration |
A local Doors Open program to run during Culture Days (September 20-October 14, 2024) is being planned by the Town’s Heritage Committee under the leadership of Councillor Racinsky. Doors Open Ontario is a province-wide initiative organized by the Ontario Heritage Trust to provide people with access to interesting and notable facilities of heritage interest.
