The Honourable Doug Ford
Premier of Ontario
Legislative Building
Queen's Park
Toronto, ON, M7A 1A1
Dear Premier:
I know these are trying times for you and your government making daily difficult decisions on COVID-19 related matters. It is also a difficult time for small businesses in the Province of Ontario.
We are reaching close to 70% of the population with at least one vaccination. Our COVID-19 cases are now falling well below 1,000 cases per day as well as our test positive percentages are experiencing the lowest numbers since April.
I ask you, on behalf of small businesses, to consider opening up sooner than June 14. Small businesses such as salons, barbers, restaurants with patios, gyms, dance studios, small retail shops, etc. are all suffering financially.
Premier, you allowed the small businesses to open in part with restrictions (social distancing, restricted numbers inside, tables spaced, etc.) and the businesses adhered to the regulations. Every day a business can open it is putting money in someone’s pocket to help pay their bills and help the economy.
I have heard many concerns from the “Mom & Pop” businesses that are ideal for browsing and spontaneous shopping. These are the faces of Main St. Ontario. Salons, dance studios are predominantly run by women entrepreneurs and this sector of our businesses have been hit extremely hard.
I know Premier, you have a lot on your plate, and I applaud many of your decisions. I hope you consider opening small businesses with health guidelines.
Stay safe!
Sincerely,
Rick Bonnette
Mayor, Town of Halton Hills
