Celebrations of Canada Day has come and gone. I would like to thank all of the volunteers who organized the events in Glen Williams as well as the Acton BIA who organized the events at Prospect Park. As always, the Acton Fire Fighters Association put on a spectacular fireworks display at Prospect Park. While we are enjoying the holiday, it is these volunteers putting on the show that make us be so proud to be Canadian. That folks is "Small Town Living at its Best."
Council recently passed a motion at our last meeting stating we support free trade and are vehemently opposed to restrictive trade policies.
The Trump administration is fuelling a trade war with Canada and now China. I want to reiterate that no one here in Halton Hills or Canada wants a Trade War. No one wins. There are always job losses on both sides of the boarder. Municipalities, families will be affected if Trump Tariffs come into effect. This is not a game. Back in 2009, Ontario lost 40,000 jobs. Part was due to the recession, but many were caused by protection policies from "Buy American" policies. Council hopes that the threats from Trump will be more bluster than action.
I was very pleased to hear our future Premier Doug Ford state that he stands shoulder to shoulder with Prime Minister Trudeau along with the other Federal Party leaders on the issue. This is no time for partisanship politics.
President Trump insults Canadians by accusing us of purchasing US shoes and scuffing them up to save a few bucks on tariffs. It's called duty Mr. President. So before you scuffle off to Buffalo to buy shoes I suggest you shop smart, shop local, shop Halton Hills. In the end let's hope common sense prevails.
School is now out so drivers please be vigilant as there will be some very excited kids on the streets.
In another week construction will begin for the new state of the art skateboard and action park located by the Gellert Centre. This will be a destination skateboard park.
Congratulations to the Rotary Club of Acton on celebrating their 70th anniversary. They maybe a small group but they are mighty. They have contributed so much to the Town of Acton over the 70 years.
The Georgetown Youth Company just celebrated 15 years bringing entertainment for many to enjoy.
Halton Catholic School Board Trustee Mark Rowe is not running for re-election. I had a great working relationship with Mark and would like to thank him for his eight years of service.
