HALTON HILLS, ON – The Town of Halton Hills is proud to proclaim November 24–30, 2025 as Talk to a Stranger Week, joining communities across Canada in supporting GenWell’s national campaign to foster human connection and combat social isolation.
Talk to a Stranger Week encourages residents to embrace the power of simple interactions—saying hello, sharing a smile, or striking up a conversation with someone new. Research shows that people who speak to strangers just once a week are up to three times happier, and nearly 100% of the time, both people feel glad the connection happened.
“Halton Hills is known for its welcoming spirit and strong sense of community,” said Mayor Ann Lawlor. “By proclaiming Talk to a Stranger Week, we’re inviting everyone to take a moment to connect—whether it’s with a neighbour, a barista, or someone you meet on a walk. These small acts of kindness and curiosity can brighten our days, strengthen our community, and remind us that we all belong. Let’s show what ‘Small Town Living at its Best’ truly means—one conversation at a time.”
The campaign, led by GenWell—a registered Canadian charity—aims to give residents the permission and encouragement to build healthier connection habits, especially as many continue to recover from the social impacts of the pandemic. The Town’s proclamation amplifies this message locally and encourages meaningful acts of connection throughout the week. Residents are invited to share their stories and experiences at talktoastrangerweek.org, and to join in creating a more connected Halton Hills—one conversation at a time.
The Town of Halton Hills, with a population of approximately 60,000, consists of two urban centres, Georgetown and Acton, the Halton Hills Premier Gateway employment area, three hamlets – Glen Williams, Stewarttown and Norval – and several smaller settlements. Halton Hills has long been recognized for its natural beauty, active agricultural community, high quality of life and proximity to major centres, including Brampton, Mississauga and Toronto. The Town is ranked as one of the top small communities in Canada by a national magazine.
