HALTON HILLS, ON – Recognizing those who served and fought for the liberties Canadians enjoy today, was the impetus behind dedicating a crosswalk to veterans.
The public is invited to attend a ceremony on Thursday, September 25 at 5 p.m. where the new veterans crosswalk at Elgin Street South and Mill Street East (Hwy 7) in Acton will be unveiled. The presentation will include remarks from Mayor Ann Lawlor and Peggy Graham, President of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 197.
The veterans crosswalk was an initiative brought forward by Local and Regional Councillor Clark Somerville. “This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War,” he said, “Given this milestone, it is important that we have a remembrance to honour our veterans and those who serve and safeguard our country.”
Town staff worked with members of the Acton Legion, Branch 197 to bring the event to fruition.
“I am delighted that the Town recognized the importance of the crosswalk initiative,” said Legion President Peggy Graham. “Our members contributed $5500 towards this project, with the municipality picking up the rest. I appreciate this investment in our streetscape and I’m pleased that Town Council recognized the significance of this project.”
“It’s important to recognize, cherish and preserve our history,” said Mayor Ann Lawlor. “This dedicated crosswalk will serve as a reminder of our veterans and our armed forces personnel who maintain Canada’s liberties and peace.”
