HALTON HILLS, ON – The province’s recent announcement giving municipalities the power to issue fines for illegal land uses is great news for Halton Hills. Council and I have been pushing for stronger enforcement tools for a long time.
Today, more than 50 illegal truck yards have been identified in our town, with drone evidence clearly showing hundreds of parked transport trucks. The damage to our land is real – these operators are ignoring our zoning regulations and destroying valuable farmland, creating safety and nuisances for neighbours.
The Town has successfully secured several convictions with penalties ranging from $15,000 to $110,000 in fines and currently has 27 charges before the Provincial Offences Court. The staff time is significant.
I’m happy to see the province taking action. This progress reflects the work of Caledon, Milton, King, Brampton and Vaughan working together with legal advisors, delegations at provincial conferences, and conversations with our local MPPs. I also want to thank our community—especially those who supported our advocacy campaign to Joseph Racinsky, MPP for Wellington-Halton Hills, asking him to push for legislative change.
Giving municipalities the ability to fine illegal operators will help us eradicate the serious problem of illegal truck depots. I hope the legislation passes quickly.
