HALTON HILLS, ON – The first official day of summer is this week, and the countdown is on to the last day of school! My column this month will highlight some of the great opportunities that our Town offers for fun in the sunshine.
Our beautiful parks, trails and natural spaces allow family and friends to relax, play and socialize. Discover nature within our community on over 30 km of trails that intersect with many parks and places of interest. Over 60 local parks offer a variety of family-friendly activities, including playgrounds, sports fields, skate parks, splash pads, gardens, pavilions and much more.
Many of our larger playgrounds have toys as well as swings, slides and climbing equipment! Program staff have been busy over the winter sourcing heavy duty toy trucks and adding identifiable Town of Halton Hills stickers. Toys promote creativity, encourage cooperative play and make play times longer.
Love to skate? We've got you covered. Explore one of three great skateparks in Halton Hills for scootering, BMX and skateboarding. The parks at the Gellert Community Centre, on Guelph St. beside Mold-Masters SportsPlex and Three Musketears beside the Acton Arena are skating centres.
Halton Hills offers three splash pad locations to stay cool during the summer heat. Bring your water toys! Sites at Dominion Gardens and Gellert in Georgetown and Prospect Park in Acton will keep you refreshed. Splash pads are open seasonally from Victoria Day Weekend to Labour Day Weekend.
The Town offers well-lit, fenced areas to exercise and socialize your dog while enjoying a chat with other dog owners. Dogs are permitted to run off leash under the supervision and control of their owners. Parks are managed in cooperation with Leash Free Halton Hills. Check out sites at Trafalgar Sports Park, Cedarvale Park and Prospect Park.
The trails map is the perfect companion on your next hike. In it you will find up-to-date trail routes, trail terrain, distance, access and park information. In addition, beautiful local photographs will inspire your next trail adventure. Walk, bike, hike or jog a trail in your neighbourhood today! Printed copies of trail maps are available at Town facilities, or you can download a copy.
The Town of Halton Hills operates outdoor tennis and pickleball courts for the public and use by community clubs. In addition, arena floor space is used for indoor gameplay during the operating season.
Check out the Library for gear to enjoy your parks and playground travels even more! The Library has Backyard Explorer Kits, pickleball and tennis sets, walking poles, family recreation activities, and Backpack Kits that you can borrow.
The Town encourages socializing in your own neighbourhood with Block Party Kits. A neighbourhood Block Party allows residents of all ages to meet each other, share interests and strengthen our community connections.
If you're organizing a Block Party in your neighbourhood, our Neighbourhood Programming Team is available to help and assist with planning. Check out the Block Party Kit and apply.
See you at the Canada Day celebrations in the Glen and Acton!
