Cooling & Warming Centres

Cooling Centres

Cooling centres are regular municipal facilities like arenas, libraries and community centres that offer public spaces and air conditioning.

During yellow heat warnings: Cooling centres remain open during regular business hours. These facilities give residents a space to escape the heat and access bottle filling stations, washrooms and limited seating.

Residents are urged to avoid heat-related illness and recognize that while everyone is at risk during a heat wave, some groups are more vulnerable than others. Those most at risk include older adults (65+), infants and young children and the chronically ill, including people with asthma. The public is advised to "beat the heat" by taking these precautions:

  • Drink lots of water and natural fruit juices
  • Stay out of the blazing sun or heat. UV rays are strongest between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
  • Avoid strenuous physical activity outdoors, including gardening and lawn maintenance
  • Close blinds and shutters during the daytime and open them at night
  • Take cool showers and mist yourself and your clothing with cool water to help keep yourself from overheating

Never leave children, older adults or pets unattended in a car, even for a short period of time. During a heat alert, please take a moment to call or visit family and neighbours who may be at risk.
