Climate change mitigation involves actions that reduce the causes of climate change, such as greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Through mitigation policies, plans and strategies, the Town is focusing on corporate and community-wide actions to reduce or remove GHG emissions that contribute to climate change.
Reducing Carbon Emissions
The Town has developed the Low Carbon Transition Strategy, a roadmap that establishes the necessary actions to move Halton Hills towards the goal of becoming a low-carbon community by 2030. The Strategy is a clear, evidence-based pathway for reducing carbon emissions through improvements in homes, transportation, industry, agriculture, and waste. Reducing GHG emissions will protect our environment, reduce air pollution, improve health, and reduce energy costs for residents and businesses.
The Town is transitioning to a low-carbon community by taking energy-reducing actions and raising awareness of how to lower our carbon footprint. The 2020-2025 Corporate Energy Plan (CEP) is the Town's second Energy Conservation & Demand Management Plan, which was completed in 2014.
The Town is supporting the adoption of electric vehicles through actions like providing EV charging infrastructure and hosting information events about EVs in the community. V
The Green Development Standard was developed in 2010 and has been periodically updated in 2014 and 2021. The current version of the Green Development Standard 3 (GDS v3) was approved by the Town Council in June 2021.
Residential buildings are the second largest source of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions in Halton Hills, and the Retrofit Halton Hills pilot program uses local improvement charges as a financing tool to help homeowners retrofit their homes.
