How to apply

The steps to becoming a Volunteer at the Town of Halton Hills are:

  1. Complete an online Volunteer Application Form
  2. Participate in an interview process and provide references
  3. Attend mandatory training sessions

Interested volunteers can also visit Volunteer Halton for additional opportunities. Please note that some Volunteer positions will require a Criminal Reference Check. The associated fee will be paid for by the Volunteer.

Volunteer opportunities

Support children ages 3–12 as they embark on a fun and rewarding journey toward lifelong health and confidence in the water. Our swimming program follows the Swim for Life curriculum developed by the Lifesaving Society, focusing on essential swimming skills and water safety.

Volunteers will assist recreation staff in delivering engaging aquatic programs to children and youth in the community.

Requirements:
  • Must be 14 years of age or older by the end of the calendar year
  • Completion of Swimmer Level 6 (or equivalent)
  • Minimum commitment of once per week for nine weeks 
Aquatics Volunteer Incentive Program

The AVIP (Aquatics Volunteer Incentive) Program is designed to encourage volunteers who have a passion for aquatics to pursue a job in the field and reduce the costs necessary to become a swim instructor. Eligible participants can receive 50% off courses required to become a swim instructor.

Toddlers love to move to the music, and you can be part of the fun! This dance program is all about encouraging creativity, movement, and confidence while teaching age-appropriate dance skills to children ages 2 to 6.

As a volunteer, you'll assist recreation staff in delivering fun, energetic classes that introduce kids to the joy of dance.

Programs include:
  • Tiny Dancers – Intro to dance for ages 2–3
  • Ballet
  • Hip Hop
  • Acro
Volunteer Requirements:
  • Must be 14 years of age or older by the end of the calendar year
  • Programs run weekly during our Fall, Winter, and Spring sessions
  • Minimum commitment of once per week for nine weeks
  • Dance experience is encouraged but not required

Docents facilitate conversations and lead activities with visitors in the Helson Gallery’s Permanent Collection and Special Exhibitions. Docents promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of exhibition goals and help ensure that Gallery visitors have valuable experiences. Applicants should be 16 years of age or older and have an interest or experience in the arts.

Occasional opportunities to assist with special events such as Culture Days, Open Streets, holiday programming, or other special events. Applicants must be 14 years of age or older by the end of the calendar year.

The Hillsview Active Living Centres offer a variety of programs for older adults that include regular drop-in programs, special events, fitness programs, arts, social activities, and more.

CHAMPS Soccer and Multi-Sport are recreation programs for adults with exceptionalities. These program focus on many fundamental movement skills along with organized game play. Programs are delivered by two trained Town of Halton Hills program facilitators along with volunteers who will deliver this program weekly. 

Applicants must be 16 years of age or older and have an interest or experience working with inclusion participants, sport or recreation. Programs run weekly. Minimum nine-week commitment, once per week.

Volunteers will assist with individuals ages 20-35 years old with exceptionalities. Volunteers will assist with the set up and delivery of weekly programming. This program runs on Friday nights following our sessional programming schedule. Applicants must be 16 years of age by the end of the calendar year and commit to the current session with an interest or experience working with individuals with exceptionalities. 

Volunteers will support recreation staff in delivering high quality camp programs to children and youth in the community. Applicants must be 14 years of age or older by the end of the calendar year and commit to one full week of volunteering (35 hours). Camps occur during July and August.

The T.I.M.E. program (Together in Movement and Exercise T.I.M.E.™) is a group exercise program for individuals who have balance and mobility problems as a result of a condition such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, acquired brain injury, or weakness after a hospital stay. Designed by physiotherapists, this 1 hour program is led by T.I.M.E. certified fitness instructors. 

The aim of the program is to help improve balance and strength through a circuit station format designed to stimulate and respond to the participants’ individual abilities. Under the direction of the Fitness Leader, the Volunteer will provide support and assistance to the participants of the program. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.

Requirements
  • 18 Years or older
  • Comfortable working 1:1 with a participant
  • Actively participate in program
  • Interest in working with older adults with disabilities and/or mobility impairments
Benefits to this volunteer positions:

  • An opportunity to develop skills if you are looking for a future in mobility or active living

The Trail Steward supports the successful operation of the Town of Halton Hills trail network by performing regular inspections, reporting deficiencies, and performing light maintenance duties like removing litter on an assigned segment of trail. This program runs from mid April to November 1.

The Halton Hills Youth Centres provide an active, social and educational environment for youth in the community. Youth ages 12 – 24 years can drop in for daily recreation activities and wrap-around services provided by various partner agencies. Youth can come and go to each location freely without barriers to entry and no cost to take part.

Volunteers will support recreation staff in delivering high quality programs.

Programs include:
  • Games Nights including video games, board games, air hockey, pool and more
  • Arts and crafts
  • Cooking/baking
  • Movies
  • Drop-in gym activities (Georgetown location)
  • Outdoor games
  • Special events
