Commissioner of Oaths & Declarations

You can use the Commissioner of Oaths service for documents such as affidavits and vehicle transfers. The fee is $30.00. The service is provided in Town Hall at the Service Halton Hills counter. Town Hall is currently open for commissioning Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

You must appear before the Commissioner in person and bring photo identification. Documents should not be signed until you appear before the Commissioner of Oaths in person.

About the Service

A Commissioner of Oaths is authorized to:
  • Administer oaths and affirmations
  • Witness signatures on documents
  • Take statutory declarations
This service confirms that a statement or document has been declared to be true by the individual signing it.

What This Service Covers

The Town may commission documents such as:
  • Statutory declarations
  • Affidavits (in limited circumstances)
  • Government forms requiring a sworn statement
  • Declarations for insurance or pension purposes
Each request is reviewed individually to ensure it can be commissioned.

What This Service Does Not Cover

The Town cannot commission all documents.
This service does not include:
  • Legal advice or document preparation
  • Documents related to real estate transactions
  • Wills, powers of attorney or probate documents
  • Documents for use outside of Canada in some cases
  • Certified true copies of documents
If your document requires a Notary Public, you will need to consult a lawyer or other authorized professional.

Before You Visit

To ensure your document can be commissioned:
  • Do not sign the document in advance
  • Bring valid government-issued photo identification
  • Ensure all documents are complete and ready for review
  • Confirm that your document qualifies for commissioning
Staff may refuse to commission documents that do not meet requirements.
