Application Descriptions

The applications seek permission to construct a development that consists of:

• 12 stacked townhouse units – the building is intended to be divided into three blocks, each containing four stacked townhouse units that range from one to two storeys and a mix of two and three bedrooms.
• Two outdoor amenity areas are proposed on the north and east side of the lot.
• Vehicular access is proposed by way of one common private driveway off Queen Street.
• A total of 13 parking spaces are proposed for the 12 units including one barrier free.

Project Status

• Applications filed in late April 2025 and public notification completed shortly after. View the Notice of Received Applications.
• 1st submission materials circulated to Town and external agency staff for review in late April 2025 (see corresponding heading below for 1st submission materials)
• Statutory Public Meeting scheduled for June 16, 2025 to obtain comments and feedback from the community to be incorporated as part of the Town’s review.

1. Who owns the Exchange Hotel property?

   • The property was owned privately until 2013 when it was purchased by Habitat for Humanity with assistance from Mattamy Homes.

2. Going forward, what is the Town’s role with the Exchange Hotel project?

   • Just as with any development, the Town is the approval authority for planning applications.

3. How is the history of the Exchange Hotel being respected?

   • Habitat is proposing to address heritage interpretation/commemoration of the former Exchange Hotel at the Site Plan Control stage for the proposed development.

4. What efforts were made to preserve the building?

   • Significant efforts were made by the Town and Habitat to conserve the former Exchange Hotel building and its cultural heritage value as part of the previous development plans for the site. However, due to its significantly deteriorated condition following years of exposure to the elements, the relocation and preservation of the building was not feasible. As a result, the former Exchange Hotel building was demolished in 2019.

5. What is the time frame for the 12 stacked townhouse units proposed for the site?

   • Plans have been submitted for the proposed development and the formal planning process is in progress and expected to be completed within the next six to eight months. Public participation is ongoing throughout the review process. No estimated timeframe for when a recommendation report will be brought forward to council for consideration at this time.
