Compliance Memo Request

A Compliance Memo provides written confirmation of whether a proposed project or land use complies with the Town of Halton Hills Zoning By‑law.
Compliance Memos are commonly requested to support building permit applications, business planning, real estate transactions and due‑diligence reviews.

What a Compliance Memo Is

A Compliance Memo:
  • Confirms the applicable zoning for a property
  • Identifies permitted uses under the Zoning By‑law
  • Reviews zoning provisions relevant to a specific proposal
  • Confirms whether the proposal complies with zoning requirements
A Compliance Memo is an information tool only. It does not:
  • Replace a building permit
  • Grant permission to construct
  • Approve work to begin
  • Replace other required approvals

When a Compliance Memo Is Required

You may be asked to obtain a Compliance Memo:
  • Before submitting a building permit application
  • When planning a residential or commercial project
  • When establishing or expanding a business
  • During the purchase or sale of a property
  • For financing, legal or insurance purposes
  • To confirm zoning as part of due diligence
Obtaining a Compliance Memo early can help identify zoning issues before investing time or money into detailed plans.

What Is Reviewed

A Compliance Memo may review zoning matters such as:
  • Zoning designation and special provisions
  • Permitted land uses
  • Setbacks, lot coverage and building height
  • Parking requirements
  • Home occupation permissions
  • Site‑specific zoning exceptions, where applicable
The review is based on the current Zoning By‑law and information provided at the time of request.

What Is Not Included

A Compliance Memo does not:
  • Review building code compliance
  • Approve construction details
  • Confirm compliance with other by‑laws
  • Replace required inspections
  • Guarantee approval of future applications
Additional approvals may still be required.

How to Request a Compliance Memo

To request a Compliance Memo, you will need to provide:
  • Property address
  • Description of the proposed use or project
  • Supporting drawings or documents, if applicable
Fees apply and are subject to the Town’s current fee schedule.

Submitted Compliance Memo Applications

Once a Compliance Memo request has been submitted, the following applies:
  • Processing time: It is recommended that requests be submitted a minimum of ten (10) business days before the date the memo is required.
Some commercial and industrial projects may require additional processing time.
  • Fees: Payment of applicable fees is required before processing can begin.
  • Delivery: A copy of the completed Compliance Memo will be emailed to the applicant once the review is complete.
  • Rural properties: For rural properties, when completing the Property Information section of the request form, select “Esquesing” as the city.
