Public is Invited to Veterans Crosswalk Unveiling
HALTON HILLS, ON – Recognizing those who served and fought for the liberties Canadians enjoy today, was the impetus behind dedicating a crosswalk to veterans.
The public is invited to attend a ceremony on Wednesday, May 27 at 5 p.m. where a new veterans crosswalk at the intersection of Princess Anne Drive and Charles Street (S.) in Georgetown (near Remembrance Park) will be unveiled. The presentation will include remarks from Mayor Ann Lawlor and Brad Gillies, President of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 120. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held on Thursday, May 28 at 5 p.m.
Town staff worked with members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 120 to bring the event to fruition.
“I’m very encouraged that the Town acknowledged the importance of this initiative,” said Legion President Brad Gillies. “The municipality supported the project by covering the installation costs, and I truly appreciate this contribution to our streetscape. It’s rewarding to see this project come to fruition and recognize the sacrifice of veterans and the contributions of the Canadian Legion.”
“It’s important to recognize, cherish and preserve our history,” said Mayor Ann Lawlor. “This dedicated crosswalk will serve as a reminder of our veterans and our armed forces personnel who maintain Canada’s liberties and peace.”
To accommodate the installation and unveiling of the Veterans’ Commemorative Crosswalk, the Town of Halton Hills will implement temporary road and parking closures in Georgetown:
- Princess Anne Drive will be closed between the Charles Street (N.) and Charles Street (S.) intersections from Monday, May 25 at 9 p.m. to Wednesday, May 27 at 7 p.m.
- In addition, the Edith Street parking lot will be closed on May 27 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. to provide dedicated parking for veterans attending the unveiling event.
