Tree Planting Project Technician - Contract (202660)

Reporting to the Manager, Environment and Climate, the Tree Planting Project Technician will support tree planting projects on Town-owned land, including along road rights-of-way and in parks. The Tree Planting Project Technician will bring their technical tree and environmental knowledge to identify and map potential tree planting locations, support tree planting contract management, conduct tree inventory data collection, and manage/analyze related spatial data.

The Technician will also play a key role in engaging with the public, businesses, and community groups to collaborate on tree planting initiatives, increase awareness of the benefits of trees, and share information on how the community can plant, care for, and protect trees. As needed, the Technician will support other environmental projects to help advance the Town’s vision as a nature-rich community and support implementation of the Town’s Strategic Plan. This role will spend about half the time working on-site and engaging with the community and partners, and the other half will be office.

Accountabilities:

  • Comply with corporate and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ensure a high degree of service for both internal and external customers in accordance with Town standards.
  • Identify and map potential tree planting locations on Town-owned land, primarily along road rights-of-way and in parks.
  • Complete site assessments of potential planting locations including assessing soil type, collecting soil samples, and checking for above- and below-ground conflicts, such as utilities.
  • Recommend suitable tree species based on site conditions.
  • Consult with other staff/departments as appropriate to confirm suitability of planting locations.
  • Engage regularly with residents, businesses and community groups/organizations to identify potential planting sites, share information about the benefits of trees, communicate upcoming tree planting & management activities, and promote best practices for tree planting and care.
  • Assist with planting contractor management, such as providing planting location instruction, follow-up inspections, and on- or off-site support as needed.
  • Collect inventory data for trees, other green infrastructure assets, and invasive species, as assigned, using a tablet and hand-held GPS receiver.
  • Manage spatial data and ensure data quality through data review and following up on deficiencies.
  • Support community groups leading naturalization plantings on Town land and maintain regular communication with the group lead.
  • Assess naturalization planting locations for required site prep and coordinate associated activities.
  • Support (on site) during naturalization planting activities/events, as needed.
  • Assist with the development of the Town’s Green Infrastructure Asset Management Plan as needed, such as support with asset inventories, mapping, data analysis, etc.
  • Assist with other environmental stewardship projects as needed, such as invasive species management projects, Privately Owned Tree Management Strategy actions, developing communication content, conducting research, supporting grant applications, biodiversity projects, etc.
  • Support environmental community outreach and engagement programs, as needed.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Forestry, Urban Forestry, Arboriculture, Natural Resource Management, Forest Conservation, or a related discipline, or the equivalent in combined education and experience
  • ISA certified arborist is considered an asset
  • Minimum of 1 year’s work experience in urban forestry, forestry, arboriculture or a directly related field.
  • Excellent tree identification skills, knowledge of native tree species and common tree pests and diseases and understanding of tree biology.
  • Applied knowledge of tree planting and care best practices.
  • Knowledge and understanding of invasive species, soils, and ecology in Ontario.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Excellent organizational, project management, time management and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently, multi-task and prioritize work to meet project deadlines.
  • Working knowledge of computer software and techniques applicable to the areas of inventory databases, such as Access or ArcGIS to create and maintain an inventory database. 
  • Experience working with the public or community groups through collaborative projects and/or engagement and outreach.
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook). 
  • Class G Driver license in good standing and reliable vehicle to use occasionally on corporate business.

Compensation:

The compensation rate for this temporary contract position is $32.27 - $38.41 (35 hours per week). Duration of Contract is approximately twelve (12) months, with the possibility to extend.

Location:

This position allows a blend of working onsite and remotely based on the needs of the business, in accordance with the Town’s Work from Home Policy, and as subject to change. This position will also require some flexibility in the incumbent’s availability and work schedule.
