Tax Relief

This program (provided under Regional Bylaw No. 20-16 as amended) gives eligible homeowners the opportunity to fully defer their annual property taxes, interest free. Its goal is to help older residents of fixed incomes to manage the rising cost of living and remain in their homes.

You may qualify for a $500 grant if you’re 65 or older, receive the Guaranteed Income Supplement, and own and live in your Halton Hills home for at least one year. Current recipients of the Senior’s Tax Grant will automatically receive an application in the mail annually. Annual submission deadline is October 1.

Halton Region provides a tax deferral for all property tax increases to eligible low-income seniors and low-income persons with a disability.

The Charity Rebate Program provides rebates to registered charities that have a valid registration number issued by the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency and occupy a space within a commercial or industrial property.
Application must be submitted by February 28 for the previous year’s property taxes.

Eligible owners of designated heritage properties may apply for a partial refund of property taxes to support ongoing conservation efforts.
Applications are accepted from January 1 to February 28 annually.

Sections 357 and 358 allow property owners to apply for a tax reduction or cancellation. Section 357 applies to changes during the current tax year, such as fire or demolition. Section 358 applies to overcharges caused by a gross or manifest assessment roll error.

Owners of eligible conservation land may qualify for property tax relief. Applications are due July 31 of the current year.
Property taxes must continue to be paid as billed while you wait for an assessment or classification change. Penalties and interest apply to missed payments.

Properties deemed farmland by Agricorp may qualify for farm property tax treatment. Application deadlines are provided on the application.

Owners of properties containing eligible forest land may qualify for reduced property taxes, applications are due June 30 of the current year.
