HALTON HILLS, ON – Where did the summer go? While some days the heat was overwhelming, and the lack of rain meant that our sprinklers were spinning, June and July were amazing for outdoor pleasures. Hope the sunny days continue for September events – more farm market visits, pool and park time, local excursions, and trail treks. And there’s still a chance to catch a big one at Fairy Lake in Acton!
September is always a busy month for community events and Town programs. One important activity currently underway by Halton Hills Council is an Official Plan Review—a land use analysis that will shape our community’s growth and character for years to come. The process responds to changes in provincial planning legislation and new growth targets taking us to 2051. (That seems like a long time in the future, but municipal planning decisions need to take a long view so the infrastructure can be built over several years.)
Subjects covered by the planning analysis include:
What kind of town do you want to live in?
One with a larger population with more business and facilities and entertainment? Busier streets with more activity? More housing options including apartment style and townhouses? More jobs, shopping and daily activities that are close by and may be accessed without a car?
Or....
A town with a slow growing population which maintains the existing character (small town surrounded by rural and agricultural areas)? Limited growth of business and job opportunities in selected areas? Some travel out of town for work and shopping? Attention paid to saving heritage buildings?
What is your vision?
Town staff have been out and about this summer seeking opinions from our residents. We’re asking how you want your community to feel in the next 25 years. Look for the Town of Halton Hills pop-up tent at the Georgetown and Acton Fairs and complete the survey. You can also check online at LetsTalkHaltonHills.ca and find out more about the Official Plan Review.
And a few final notes: The September flurry is around the corner! See you at the Terry Fox Run (it’s the 45th). And our two community fairs are soon – in Georgetown and then Acton – with midways, home and farm displays, music and more! And of course, keep your eyes open for our kids heading back to school.
