From the Mayor
Thanks to you: Earth Week a great success2019-05-08 13:51:002019-05-08 13:51:00Mayor Rick Bonnette's Monthly Column
Keeping Halton Hills beautiful, sustainable and clean has always been a top priority to me and to Council. Judging from the remarkable success of this year's annual Earth Week program, residents feel the same.
You, our community, attended events, participated in clean-ups and shared online with the enthusiasm we've come to expect. It's one of your proudest achievements and it continues all year round. Clearly, our community shares a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and willingly participates. You encourage your families and kids to have pride in your Town and join in the events. Never forget the deep respect and appreciation Council and I have for your efforts.
I'll let you see for yourself just how much you've accomplished this year. Events included: 22-Minute Makeover, Earth Day Event, Used Bicycle Buy and Sell, Open House & Sustainability Fair, Community Clean-up and Guided Nature Walk and Clean-up.
This year's statistics say it all:
- Cars through events: approx. 1500
- Trees sold: 900
- Compost picked up by residents: all 70 cubic yards of ½ inch compost
- Collected for food banks (Acton & Georgetown) approx. 950 lbs
- Donated to food banks: approx. $1392.
- Total amount of garbage collected: 8.58 tonnes
- Steel collected: 3 tonne trucks
- Tires collected: 3 tonne trucks.
I did some clean-up myself and was happy to get a first-hand look at the community efforts, and of course, to say hello to many of you. I always appreciate this opportunity.
On behalf of Council, I want to say a heartfelt thanks to the many staff and volunteers who work every year to make each Earth Week successful. It takes a lot of hours and commitment from people who choose to volunteer their limited time for the sustainability of our Town.
Sincere thanks to our Earth Week sponsors, Superior Glove, McDonalds and Tim Hortons. This kind of success wouldn't be possible without your ongoing support.
Keeping it real…
