Mayor's Remarks: International Women's Day2019-03-10 09:50:002019-03-10 09:50:00Mayor Rick Bonnette's Monthly Column
International Women's Day is a global celebration marking the economic, cultural and political achievements of women and a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
As Mayor of this beautiful Town of Halton Hills I strive to be an advocate, a supporter and a champion for everyone in this community.
I look forward to a time when we don't need a special day to remind us that we are all equal…
I look forward to a time when it is a given that people receive equal pay for equal work…
I look forward to a time when there ceases to be violence against women and disparity between genders…
As adults we have a responsibility to set the tone, be the voice and model the behaviour that we want exhibited by others. We are parents, uncles and aunts and grandparents. We can make a difference by empowering our young women, our daughters, our nieces and anyone whom we mentor formally or informally.
I believe every generation is an improvement on the last and I hope that at some point, every day is International Women's Day.
Those of us who are employers also bear responsibility for the policies we set and the actions we take in hiring and managing our staff.
At Town Hall, we hire on the basis of the best candidate for the job. As it turns out, almost half our staff are women!
I know that there are many examples of successful women in this Town who are running their own businesses. Please accept my congratulations to you all for the positive role modeling you do.
Thank you to all who support and make possible, International Women's Day here in Halton Hills!
