HALTON HILLS, ON – The Town of Halton Hills is inviting the community to come and play in the streets. The first OPEN STREETS community event of 2019 is offered in partnership with the Downtown Georgetown Farmers Market and the annual Bike It to the Market event on Saturday, June 15, and this years’ inaugural Community Better Challenge sponsored by ParticipACTION.
“Open Streets are community-based programs that temporarily open a selected street to people, closing them to cars. By doing this the streets become a place where people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds can come out, be active and improve their health. Open Streets are considered a ‘Healthiest Practice’ as a tried and tested model developed by experts and based on results,” according to Margaret Taylor, Active Living Coordinator.
“Open Streets is always such a popular and exciting event,” said Mayor Rick Bonnette. “It’s a great opportunity for people to get active. An active lifestyle has many benefits, and our goal is to make active choices the easy choices for individuals and families in our community. I’m pleased we’re off to a strong start with so many residents participating in the Community Better Challenge.”
A morning of family-centred fun and free activity takes place on Main Street, Georgetown, between Maple Avenue and Church Street on Saturday, June 15 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Events will include road hockey, hula hooping, skipping, Zumba fitness, yoga, and more. The ParticipACTION Rally Team will also be on site as part of their cross-Canada tour of communities participating in the Community Better Challenge. Merchandise will be available at their booth.
