HALTON HILLS, ON – The Town of Halton Hills has declared an emergency. Given new statistics that are showing more than half of COVID-19 cases are the result of locally spread transmission, the Town of Halton Hills is joining the Province of Ontario and Halton Region in declaring a State of Emergency to support Public Health officials’ efforts to “flatten the curve” and slow the spread of COVID-19.
“At today’s teleconference, I advised Town Council that the CAO and I had discussed this matter and we felt the time was right for Halton Hills to declare a state of emergency,” said Mayor Rick Bonnette. “It is important that we send the strongest message possible to our community about the need to adhere to the health and safety precautions as directed by Public Health. Declaring an emergency and continuing to provide essential services is what we as local government can do; it’s now up to residents to take responsibility and demonstrate self-care and care for others by staying home and practicing physical distancing when it is necessary to be in a public place.”
Under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act, “The Head of Council may declare an emergency exists in the municipality and may take such actions and make such orders as he or she considers necessary and are not contrary to law to implement the emergency plan of the municipality and to protect property and the health, safety and welfare of the inhabitants of the emergency area.”
The Mayor and CAO have instituted daily briefings with Town Council. Over the last two weeks, the Town has taken specific actions to ensure the safety of residents, staff and the community including activating its Emergency Operations Plan, closing municipal parks and facilities, and cancelling programs. The Town’s business continuity plans were also activated to ensure essential Town services continue to be delivered. Service Halton Hills remains open to respond to general inquiries and requests for essential public safety service requests by phone at 905-873-2600, by email to Service Halton Hills.
The Town also recognizes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our local business community and a special COVID-19 page has been established on Invest Halton Hills with information to support business and the local economy during and after the pandemic.
The Town of Halton Hills, with a population of approximately 60,000, consists of two urban centres, Georgetown and Acton, the Halton Hills Premier Gateway employment area, three hamlets – Glen Williams, Stewarttown and Norval – and several smaller settlements. Halton Hills has long been recognized for its natural beauty, active agricultural community, high quality of life and proximity to major centres, including Brampton, Mississauga and Toronto. The Town is ranked as one of the top small communities in Canada by a national magazine.
