Halton Hills, ON – The latest incident of racism in Halton Hills has prompted a donation by the municipality to Crime Stoppers of Halton Inc. Leading the charge is Mayor Rick Bonnette, who directed that $2,000 be used to assist in the investigation of hate crimes – including the swastika graffiti found at George Kennedy Public School.
“To put it bluntly, I am quite distressed that there have now been multiple reported incidents of racism in Halton Hills,” he said. “This is not representative of what this community stands for and I urge people to contact Crime Stoppers if they know anything.”
Police Chief Tanner agreed, noting: “There is no place for hate anywhere in the Region of Halton or in our society. The Halton Regional Police Service always investigates these matters to the fullest extent possible. I am thankful to Mayor Bonnette and the members of Town Council for speaking out against these offensive incidents.”
Colin Jessome Executive Director of the Halton Chapter of Crime stoppers was pleased with the donation. “It’s important to get financial support so that we can offer an incentive for people to come forward. Also, having the Mayor advocate for the community to utilize Crime Stoppers to address hate crimes is a significant step in getting the message out that these are unwelcome and criminal actions.”
Crime Stoppers is an independent charitable organization that works with the public, police and media to deter and solve crime with guaranteed anonymity.
