Cooper Standard Closes Local Plant

HALTON HILLS, ON – It was disappointing news to hear on Friday, said Mayor Rick Bonnette in regards to the closing of Cooper Standard. The company that supplies systems and components for the automotive industry issued a statement noting that the closure is “due to customer vehicle volume and mix dynamics around the world.” Affected employees have been notified that the closure will happen in July.

Headquartered in Michigan with operations in 21 countries, the company’s restructuring efforts include the closure of 10 global facilities late last year.

In a conversation with a company representative, Mayor Bonnette was advised that the closure affects 275 employees of which almost half are local residents.

“This type of news is obviously devastating for the employees and their families and the Town will leverage its networking opportunities to advise on the availability of skilled workers,” said the Mayor, adding, “there is always a ripple effect to these types of announcements and we may well see this impact the local economy.”

The Mayor and other Town officials will be meeting with company representatives.
