Councillor Jon Hurst
Jon is a life-long Acton resident, who has represented his community on Halton Hills Council since 2003. He was an early advocate for sustainable building design and construction, and the use of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards for the construction of Town buildings. He is deeply concerned about climate change and is a passionate supporter of all efforts to reduce our carbon footprint.
In 1966, early in his career, Jon established his own company, providing commercial and industrial electrical services in Acton for many years. His major clients included the Town of Acton, Halton Board of Education -Acton Schools, Disston Saw and Frank Heller and Company. In 1985 he became the maintenance manager for Frank Heller and Company, until retiring in 2000.
Present Committee Work:
Jon is also Council's Liaison to the Board of Directors of Hillsview Active Living Centre, Acton. In addition he is Council's representative on the Board of Directors of Halton Healthcare, which governs the operations of the hospitals in Georgetown, Milton and Oakville. He is a member of the Halton Healthcare Board Quality and Risk Management Committee and Strategic Planning Committee.
On behalf of the Accessibility Advisory Committee Jon is a producer of the weekly "Voiceprint" program on Your TV, where news stories from the Independent/Free Press are read for the benefit of those in our community who are visually impaired.
Jon is a founding member and chair of the Acton Terry Fox Run Committee (1981), and a founder and member of the Paul Murr Memorial Golf Tournament for Cancer Research (1985).
Jon is the recipient of the Acton Citizen of the year award in 1991, and again in 2014 as a member of the Paul Murr Golf Tournament Committee. He was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Acton Rotary Club, and received the Queen's Jubilee Medal in 2012.
Jon believes in and enjoys a hands on approach to community service, with support to the Salvation Army, Acton Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society, Acton BIA, Heritage Acton, Links2Care, Youth Centres and the refugee Syrian Families in Acton.
