The Town of Halton Hills held the Official Groundbreaking Ceremonies for the Maple Avenue Fire/EMS Station located at 53 Maple Avenue and the Fire Headquarters Station located at 14007 10 Side Road on the corner of Eighth Line and 10 Side Road. These two new facilities will offer greater capacity to provide fire protection, prevention and emergency medical services for the residents of Halton Hills.
Additional support in the form of $1.9 million was received from the Municipal Infrastructure Investment Initiative Grant (MIII) program. The Honourable David Caplan, Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal states, “The Province of Ontario is proud to partner with Halton Hills in the construction of these facilities. Through investments such as these, the Province of Ontario is delivering on one of the largest investment programs in generations that will lead to nothing less than a renaissance in Ontario's public infrastructure.”
“The construction of the Fire/EMS Station created an opportunity for a partnership for the delivery of both fire and emergency medical service from a single site.” Gary Carr, Regional Chair, Halton Region further acknowledges, “This partnership not only maximizes the delivery of services but also provides for the efficient use of Regional and Municipal tax dollars.”
Mayor Rick Bonnette offers the following statement on behalf of the Members of Council and the Fire Services and Emergency Planning Committee, “Our community places great value in the vision of improving and protecting the quality of life for it's citizens. The construction of these fire stations plays a significant role in protecting our citizens from the ravages of fire, today and for future generations.”
“The final design of these two new stations was a result of extensive dialogue with the staff of the Halton Hills Fire Protection and Prevention Services staff” states ” Fire Chief A. Brent Marshall. “When complete these stations will provide our firefighters state of the art, energy efficient facilities from which to deliver enhanced fire protection, prevention, public education and emergency medical services to our community”
The two fire station projects designed by Thomas Brown Architects will be constructed at the same time and will be completed in the Spring 2009.
State of the art environmental initiatives designed to meet LEEDTM Certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) have been incorporated, including energy efficiencies gained through geothermal heating and cooling, water conservation technologies and the use of recycled materials for construction.
The investment in the two new facilities will be jointly shared by three levels of government including the Town of Halton Hills ($6.4 million), the Ontario Ministry of Infrastructure Renewal ($1.9 million) and the Regional Municipality of Halton ($1.1 million) for the Emergency Medical Service portion. Halton Hills Hydro is also a funding partner assisting with the Geothermal Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems.
